Licensing

Starting with AltTester® Desktop v 2.1.3 every user must have an account to use our tool. You can create one on our website having the following options:

  • Lite

  • Pro

Where the license is used

The license is validated by the AltTester® Server, not by AltTester® Desktop itself. What that means in practice:

  • The Start Server tab has a License key field, and a server cannot be started without one. The key is saved, so you only enter it once.

  • Your subscription decides how many apps and drivers may be connected at the same time; the limits are shown above the Connected Apps and Connected Drivers lists, and the server refuses connections beyond them.

  • The license key can only be changed while the server is stopped. If you try to change it while the server runs, AltTester® Desktop asks you to stop the server first.

  • Entering a key in that field is what activates the subscription for that server, so there is no separate activation step to do first.

  • When you run the server yourself - in a terminal, on a CI machine or in a container - it takes the key from --license-key or the ALTSERVER_LICENSE_KEY environment variable instead, and it needs a paid license. See AltTester® Server.

  • The server needs an internet connection to use the license: it checks the license when it starts and re-checks the subscription while it runs. If the licensing service can’t be reached, the server stops accepting connections until the check succeeds again - see Licensing and limits.
